How do we organise ourselves?
This guide is intended for use by communities, including local groups, residents, community hubs, informal networks and emerging organisations that want to organise and act, across different points in their governance journey. It can be used at the start of a process, when a group is deciding how to work together, or later when existing arrangements need to be reviewed.
Governance is fundamentally about how people organise themselves to make something happen. For communities wanting to act, governance raises practical questions about involvement, decision-making, resources and risk. Some groups will be starting from scratch; others may already have arrangements in place. Some may be part of a wider programme and are using or adapting a model suggested by that programme, but still need to ask whether those arrangements are suited to what they are trying to do.
Drawing on community-based interviews and case studies, as well as wider practice, this guide is designed to help answer key questions that are central to community governance and support groups at different points in their governance journey.
