The public sector, including local authorities and the NHS, spend many billions each year on contracts with voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations. This session will explore the potential opportunities to secure such income and deliver vital products and services in your local area.

Content in the session will include:

  • What are the key products and services which VCSE organisations provide for the public sector?
  • How does the procurement process work?
  • How might your organisation assess its potential to deliver to the public sector, and what first steps can you take?
  • What is the additional “social value” that your organisation can deliver – and what would you need to do to prove it?

We will explore a number of case studies, including from health & social care, community energy (including retrofit) and affordable housing.

The session will be led by Tim Crabtree, the Director of Wessex Community Assets (WCA), a social enterprise helping to develop the community economy. WCA secured contracts from 14 local authorities to deliver support to community housing organisations. Tim also founded Local Food Links Ltd, which has contracts with 56 schools to provide school meals, and Dorset Community Energy, which has contracts to provide electricity from rooftop solar PV to 24 schools and hospitals.
