Community power: the evidence

23 Feb 2021

Moving towards a community-led system of public services

Community power is an idea whose time has come. At its heart, community power is based on the principle that communities have a wealth of knowledge and assets within themselves, which if understood and nurtured by practitioners and policymakers, has the potential to strengthen resilience and enable prevention-focused public services.

Produced in collaboration with New Local, Community power: the evidence brings together existing evidence about the impact of community-led approaches – both in the UK and internationally – to set out a case for fundamental change.

These examples offer a way ahead for a different way of supporting communities to thrive – and have some significant implications for how we understand and apply evidence to a national policymaking context.

The report also builds on New Local’s Community Paradigm work to explore how we can use this new way of looking at the world to ensure that community power reaches its full potential.

Read our chief executive Matt Leach’s response to the report and why he believes we’re beginning to see the movement being played out in communities across the country.
