Journalist-at-large 2019-20

Closing date: 13 August 2019 - 12:00 am Location: Remote working
Salary: £36,000 pa

We’re awarding our second journalist-at-large fellowship

We are looking for a talented journalist and communicator to travel the country from September 2019 to August 2020 to help tell the story of Big Local, collecting stories and presenting them in compelling ways.

You’ll be following in the footsteps of Louise Tickle, our first journalist-at-large, and can find examples of her work across our website and elsewhere. Both we and Louise have had a brilliant year and we are now looking for someone who will bring their distinctive interests and insight to the opportunity.

Being given the time to build relationships is such a privilege for a journalist, and gives you the chance to build knowledge, trust and work out what stories to tell: whoever is appointed will meet the best people, and have the best 12 months!”

About Big Local

Big Local is one of the most radical and exciting grant programmes ever launched by a major Lottery funder. Between 2010-12 the Big Lottery Fund identified 150 areas that had historically ‘missed out’ on lottery and other funding. Each of those areas was allocated £1m of Big Local funding. This could be spent in any way they chose, provided local residents organised themselves to plan and manage that funding, and involved the wider community in decision-making.

We want to capture the excitement, energy and insight being generated by the Big Local programme. We are looking for someone willing to commit to a year of finding out about Big Local areas, the people behind them and the stories that they are creating. You’ll be expected to draw inspiration from these stories to write high quality articles and features, an essay and online content, placing the experiences of people and places into the context of our changing social and political landscape.

You will work with Local Trust and Big Local areas to get maximum value from the considered and thoughtful content you create, reaching thinkers and influencers.  Depending on your skills, we may also find ways to share your talents with emerging citizen journalists in Big Local areas.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for a journalist and communicator who writes beautifully, is passionate about social change, understands and can connect with local people, and is capable of self-management over the 12-month residency.  You will bring with you a wealth of contacts and experience producing features for broadsheet, current affairs and/or broadcast media.

We’ll provide £36K, dependent on experience, plus reasonable travel and accommodation expenses to support you.  We’ll also provide you with an endless source of fantastic people, amazing places and great stories which will inspire you to contribute to the growing national conversation about the power of communities.

Here’s what Louise had to say about her experience: “Being appointed Local Trust’s journalist-at-large was the start of a fascinating, stimulating and brilliantly fun year spent finding out how people have organised at grassroots level all around the country to improve their communities and learn new skills. Being given the time to build relationships is such a privilege for a journalist, and gives you the chance to build knowledge, trust and work out what stories to tell: whoever is appointed will meet the best people, and have the best 12 months – it’s an incredible opportunity and I’m already envious!”
