Ideas + inspiration = spring events
What ideas will you take away with you?
At last year's Big Local spring events, the thing that people most commonly told us they were taking away with them was ideas. Fresh ideas, new ideas, great ideas, interesting ideas, swapped and shared ideas, ideas that help and ideas which inspire.
This year, once again our events will be bubbling with ideas, as well as experience, knowledge, reassurance, enthusiasm and fun. Please join us and bring your friends, your questions, your stories, your challenges, and of course - your ideas!
There are so many fantastic workshops to choose from at each event, presented by people in Big Local areas as well as by people with particular experience of delivering community-led activities.
If you haven't booked your place yet, you can sign up now by contacting Wendy Joynes on firstname.lastname@example.org or 020 3588 0565
Our events are free for anyone who lives or works in a Big Local area and we will provide lunch. We provide financial support for travel, childcare and other care costs to residents in Big Local areas. We can also book and pay for travel in advance.
Below we've included just a taster of some of the workshops you can choose from. To see all the workshops on offer, click on the dates below to see an agenda.
Goldthorpe with Bolton-on-Dearne Big Local will be at our York spring event on Tuesday 21 April to talk about how they partnered with Thurnscoe Big Local to put on a community cinema for their neighbouring communities.
Together they have been getting over 100 people out of their homes on winter's evenings, making new friends and finding out about Big Local. They started their cinema at the local school which owns a projector and screen that often goes unused in the evenings. Screenings of Frozen (sing-along!) and Brassed Off have been packed, and families get an affordable night out right on their doorsteps.
Car sharing as one solution to tackle employment issues
Three Parishes Big Local in Weston Ryhn, St Martins and Gobowen will be at our Birmingham spring event on Thursday 23 April to talk about their car sharing initiative. They're working with Shropshire Council's sustainable transport team to develop a tailored website for a local car share scheme.
Three Parishes Big Local identified the need to promote car sharing locally as one potential solution to the issue some residents faced of not being able to travel to the surrounding employment areas.
Encouraging better money management
Central Jarrow Big Local will be at our Newcastle spring event on Friday 17 April to talk about how they are working to keep people out of the hands of loan sharks and payday lenders.
Central Jarrow Big Local has invested £20,000 in their local credit union, Bridges - Your Community Bank, to encourage better money management in the area. Their new two year partnership will raise awareness amongst residents that credit unions offer an alternative source of borrowing.
The community chef - healthy eating, skills and jobs
Newington Big Local will be at our London spring event on Saturday 25 April to talk about their recent project, the Community Chef.
The Community Chef is an exciting initiative for people in Newington to learn more about healthy eating, to develop new skills and even get jobs… not to mention to make wonderful food.
But how did the idea come about, and what does a community chef do? In this workshop we’ll find out, as well as share our own experience of the role of food and cooking in Big Local.
Working with educational institutes
St Peter's and the Moors Big Local and the University of Gloucestershire will be at our Bristol spring event on Tuesday 14 April to share their experience of working together.
They are exploring how university facilities can be used to support Big Local as well as encouraging students to take part in community-based activities. University students have also used the links with Big Local to form part of their learning, even gaining extra credits.
Find out how they came to work together, the mutual benefits of their relationship and how you might apply the lessons to your Big Local area and nearby universities, institutions and organisations.
Attracting additional funding for a play park
Barrow Island Big Local will be at ourManchester spring event on Tuesday 28 April to talk about how they built a new play area in their local park. The space was previously empty and with many families living locally without a garden, residents felt it was important to give children and young people a better public space to use.
Hear how they made this happen, how they worked with the local authority and secured additional grant funding.
Learn new skills and brush up on old ones!
We are excited to have started our new skills courses for people in Big Local areas. The course topics were selected in response to your feedback about the skills you need to deliver Big Local.
We are excited to be working with outstanding training providers and people who have taken part so far have told us how useful and relevant they are. Kathryn Andrews from Blackpool Revoe Big Local says:
"After attending the public speaking and presentation skills course in Liverpool I feel more confident about taking on presentations. I now have all the tools to enable myself to plan and execute a great presentation and still carry on should anything go wrong.
It was great to work with other Big Local areas, meet new people and catch up with those I have met previously. I can't wait for the next course and what's more it was FREE! Thanks Big Local and Cathy."
Psst! Meet our training providers at the Big Local spring events and take part in a choice of exciting bite-size skills workshops.
