About this event
We know how important shared, accessible spaces are for strong, resourceful communities. People need places to get together and build positive connections, capacity and networks.
But is a community hub, a building which provides services especially for local people, necessarily right for your Big Local area? This workshop aims to support Big Local communities who are considering setting up or developing an existing community space.
You will hear from communities that have established a hub, and from others that have decided not to. The workshop will help your Big Local to move your own ideas forward. It will tell you what support is available, tools being developed that could help you and what the next steps should be if you decide that a hub is right for your community.
Who is this workshop for?
This hubs workshop is for Big Local partnerships that:
- Find that their activities are repeatedly constrained by a lack of space
- Are thinking about setting up, developing or taking over a community hub
- May have carried out some feasibility work but are still exploring their options
- Have many questions about community hubs but aren’t sure how to answer them
- Want to learn from the experiences of others in establishing and running hubs both within and outside Big Local.
This workshop is not aimed at partnerships that have already opened a hub or committed themselves to going ahead, for example, by issuing contracts or appointing builders.

More about this event
The event is free for anyone who lives or works in a Big Local area and we will provide lunch. We also provide financial support for travel, childcare and other care costs to residents in Big Local areas. We can also book and pay for travel in advance. If you are attending a Big Local event as part of your paid work/employment then we ask that your employer cover your expenses. However, we can pay or contribute towards worker’s expenses in exceptional circumstances. Please ask when booking for further information.
