About this event

Big Local partnerships want to have a real long term impact in their communities – this workshop looks at how we can do this. Building the strengths of our communities involves supporting local community groups, helping to develop new skills and use existing ones, and building effective leadership at grass roots level.

Why is this important?

This workshop will focus on building strengths of communities – that is for Big Local partnerships to have effective roles in their areas, over the longer term, to achieve well organised, well led, active communities that will continue after the end of the Big Local programme.

On the day

The day will be a combination of presentations, workshops and group activities, including examples both from Big Local areas and other areas. There will plenty of time to meet people from other Big Local areas and talk about your ideas and experience.  The content will cover for example:

  • How to find out about the needs of local community groups e.g. a survey of groups to build up a picture of their strengths and what help they may need to thrive.
  • How to identify and build skills of residents involved in community action.
  • How to develop the organisational strengths and enterprise of community groups.
  • How to build effective leadership in communities.
  • How to build local resources, training, mentoring, action hubs etc. – to provide on-going support for active residents, community leaders and community groups.

More about this event

The workshop will be facilitated by Big Local reps Helen Thompson and Steve Skinner.

Steve is an experienced community worker who is the author of two widely used publications on building community strengths. He has also written a toolkit on community leadership.

Helen’s grassroots work has built the skills of volunteer-run organisations to strengthen their governance and access funds. Currently she delivers a community leadership programme for Walsall MBC, alongside Sustainable Funding course at Fircoft College of Adult Education.
