Dr John Whitton
John is an environmental social scientist with 20 years’ experience in urban regeneration and environmental consultancy. More recently, John’s experience includes working as a senior research scientist for the UK National Nuclear Laboratory as specialist in strategic decision making and stakeholder dialogue.
In 2010, John joined the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston and helped to establish the Centre for Energy and Power Management. He is now energy lead at the university and heads research on social sustainability, particularly the societal and community aspects of energy generation, distribution and consumption.
Defining social sustainability and enabling communities to become sustainable is a clear challenge for Local Trust and the communities that it supports.
John is Local Trust board lead on strategic learning and research, supporting projects such as the Communities in Control study by the School for Public Health Research (SPHR). John was a founding member of Rudheath and Witton Together, a community partnership in a Big Local area in mid Cheshire.
